Album Review

J.J. Cale's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection gathers a dozen of his best-known songs, including "Magnolia," "Crazy Mama," and "Call Me the Breeze," as well as "Cocaine" and "After Midnight." The collection focuses on his '70s work, featuring not only singles, but album tracks from Naturally, Really, 5, and Okie, among others. Though it's not as extensive a collection as Anyway the Wind Blows: The Anthology or The Very Best of J.J. Cale, this compilation does provide a good, concise primer on Cale's influential mix of earthy blues-rock and finely crafted songwriting.

Tremendous musical artist. He's in the shadow's of Clapton, but he deserves more credit. Greatly underrated

Down home music with a down home sound

This is truly one of the more underrated performers I have in my music collection. He writes great songs, plays great guitar, makes great arrangements, and makes great recordings. People such as Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd have covered his work, but his arrangements have more of a down to home sound. His version of "After Midnight" is a personal favorite of mine. If you are starting out in listening to his material, this is a good album to start out with.

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: Best of JJ Cale

I've been listening to JJ Cale since I bought my first JJ Cale album, Naturally, in 1972 when I was just 14 years old.... Mr. Cale was phenomenal then and was when he released this "Best of JJ Cale" album in 2002 :) - JJ Cale was sensational then and is even more sensational today! Thank you JJ :)

With his laid-back rootsy style, J.J. Cale was best known for writing "After Midnight" and "Cocaine," songs that Eric Clapton later made into hits. But Cale's influence wasn't only through songwriting -- his distinctly loping sense of rhythm and shuffling boogie became the blueprint for the adult-oriented roots rock of Clapton and Mark Knopfler, among others. Cale's refusal to vary the sound of his music over the course of his career caused some critics to label him as a one-trick pony, but he managed...
