iTunes Review

Tift Merritt has been amassing a catalog of intelligent, heartfelt folk-country songs that have yet to break through in the manner of Lucinda Williams' or Patty Griffin's roadmap-of-Americana compositions. That could change with 2012's Traveling Alone. Behind the boards, Tucker Martine focuses Merritt in a way few producers can do. Throw in Calexico's John Convertino (an impeccable drummer), Eric Heywood (a pedal steel expert), Marc Ribot (Tom Waits' and Elvis Costello's go-to guitarist), and even Andrew Bird (on vocals and violin for the lovely duet "Drifted Apart"), and you have guests who know how to sympathize with a talented artist. Or, perhaps, Merritt simply wrote the best songs of her career. The title track reflects the lonesome truths of a musician who can only rely on herself. "Still Not Home" ramps up the tempo for a rocker that casual listeners might mistake for Emmylou Harris. "Spring" shows just how much natural beauty there is in Merritt's voice and how a backing group's restraint can yield the strongest results.

Born in Houston, Texas, in 1975, Merritt's family moved to North Carolina when she was young and she's lived there ever since. Merritt first developed an interest in music when she was a child and learned...
