This San Francisco–based synth-pop duo of Jared Brannan and Brandon Bews craft a beautiful sound that never leans on gimmicks or trivial hooks to get their points across. This is deeply satisfying electronic soul music, where the textures are warm and the melodies are inviting with an undercurrent of melancholia that tempers the joy from being obnoxious. Therefore, “Last Time,” “We Are Grown,” and “Enter The Night” don’t recall the ‘80s as much as they stake a claim for the ‘10s. They claim influences such as M83, The Killers, and Vangelis, but that doesn’t come close to explaining what’s happening here. To hear it is to believe.
