iTunes Review

With The Pines’ third full-length album, the Minneapolis duo further explore their love for blending traditional Americana with the kind of indie-rock approach that led them to share the stage with likeminded artists such as Jolie Holland, the Arcade Fire and Bon Iver. Tremolo picks up where 2007’s critically lauded Sparrows In the Bell left off, but this time around David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey’s wintry alt-folk musings allow a little springtime warmth to shine on their songs – though you wouldn’t know it from the haunting opener “Pray Tell." It’s in the second tune “Heart & Bones” where the sun breaks through the clouds and glows on an uplifting melody that’s whisper-sung with intimacy. Bo Ramsey’s production resonates a stark beauty throughout, allowing songs such as the arresting “Lonesome Tremolo Blues” to play like one of Townes Van Zandt’s salt-of-the-earth serenades. They also breathe new life into Mississippi John Hurt’s “Spike Driver Blues” with driving tempos and a confident swagger.

You will not be disappointed

If you like good music this is a CD for you. The songs are well-crafted. The guitars are great. I look for great things from these two young men. For those who know Bo Ramsey (often backs up Greg Brown and others), one of The Pines is his son Benson. Bo helped produce the album and plays on several tracks. His touch is on this CD and it makes it great. I would say that you will hear Bob Dylan, the Bodeans, and the Jayhawks in these songs, but with just enough difference to make them The Pines.

One song was all it took

I heard "Pray Tell" on an XM station and liked it so much I jumped in and bought the whole CD. This was one gamble that paid out. The production is sparse, so that when a buzzy guitar steps in, you hear it in it's dreamy strange glory. Good and distinctive vocals and song writting that can get on the darkside. If you like contemporary singer/songwriters with strong roots in americana, this is it. I look forward to hearing where they go from here.

Saw these guys live last night with Mason Jennings and they were amazing. These guys are very talented and have a great voices.

Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Pines fuse the spare acoustic sound and evocative storytelling of folk music with the eclecticism and attitude of rock & roll. The Pines were formed in 2002 by vocalists, guitarists, and songwriters David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey; while both men were born and raised in Iowa, they happened to meet while they were living in Tucson, Arizona, and after discovering they were of similar minds musically, they began writing songs together. David and Benson both...
