Customer Reviews

i just listened to this album tonight for the first time almost ten years, and was surprised to hear how good it was. (i guess there is a reason why i listened to it for weeks straight back in high school.) it really sort of sounds like the b*st*rd brother of sepultura's tour-de-force, 'roots', which makes sense as max carried those ideas forward to his new band. if you love 'roots', and want some more of the same, this album is for you; if 'roots' was a bit too hard for you, this album will hurt your head.

Memories from Wyoming (?)

Discovered these guys in Mammoth Music in Riverton, WY in 1998ish, the store clerk put this in the CD player there and I was pretty wowed. So many reviews on here start out "This is Max Cavalera (or some other artist) at their very best! zmfg 10/10 *drool*" but I'm not going to do that. I really didn't listen to much Sepultura before this but I really did enjoy the hell out of the first Soulfly CD. Good songs include Bumba, First Commandment, Umbabarauma, and Quilombo. I did like the album Primitive better but it all started here. Not really a Christian myself or anything, but there's a lot of honesty here. He did kinda beat the Dana thing like a dead horse over the following decade, might be time to move on now man.

This is a great CD period the songs are balanced from insane thrash to more peaceful songs. Has many Latin American influences and sounds just really good

Upon his exit from Sepultura in late 1996, singer/guitarist/songwriter Max Cavalera almost automatically set out to form his next musical endeavor, the ultra-heavy Soulfly. Besides leaving one of the most popular heavy metal bands in the world, which he'd co-founded in the early '80s, he also had to deal with the unsolved murder of Dana Wells, his stepson and best friend. Using music as therapy to overcome his depression, Cavalera put together a band that included Roy "Rata" Mayorga on drums (ex-Thorn)...
