iTunes Review

Starting in the '80s, Michael Been was the lead singer and bassist for The Call, a powerful California rock ’n’ roll band that initially released seven albums in an eight-year stretch; most found a home on college radio, and a few found their way to MTV and commercial radio outlets. His son Robert Levon Been is a member of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. After The Call officially called it quits following their final live album in 2000, Michael worked as BRMC’s sound engineer until 2010, when he died backstage at a festival in Belgium with his son’s band. In tribute to his late father, son Robert assembled the remaining members of The Call and recorded several concerts with them playing together in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Robert is a more atmospheric singer, and the band respond by pulling back on the driving guitar line and emphasizing the keyboards on such key tracks as “The Walls Came Down” and “Uncovered,” which complete the album's standard version. The deluxe edition adds five bonus tracks, including the 1990 single “What’s Happened to You.”

I’m a big BRMC fan and discovered the Call this way. I love the sound & feel of this album — a great tribute to his father. I find myself going to back to this record frequently.

Tribute Times 10

As tributes go this is a special one. The original band with Michael's son filling his shoes. It's the most honest and sincere tribute I've heard. The band sounds a good as ever and Robert evokes so many memories of his dad. Worth it to any fan of BRMC or The Call

I really wanted to give it 5 stars.

I am a big Call fan and love the BRMC and had high hopes for this release but something is off with the recording or the mixing. Now that the older Call albums are now on I Tunes I would stick to the originals. Preview the cuts and decide for yourself. That said, should they do a tour I would love to go.

Despite great critical acclaim due to their literate, passionate rock, praise from some well-respected contemporaries, and a string of strong releases, the San Francisco band the Call never quite escaped cult status. The predicted breakthrough to a wider audience never materialized. Formed in the San Francisco area in 1980, the quartet, led by vocalist/guitarist Michael Been, released their self-titled debut in 1982 and earned positive reviews. The following year, the band issued Modern Romans and...
