iTunes Review

Magagraphitti is the sophomore solo effort from Vordul Mega, the less heralded half of the once mighty underground hip-hop duo Cannibal Ox. On Cannibal Ox’s landmark release, The Cold Vein, Mega’s partner Vast Aire garnered critical praise for his abstract rhymes and angular cadences while Mega, with his more modest everyman delivery, saw his not insignificant contributions largely overlooked. But while Vast Aire may be a more technically inspiring MC, his labyrinthine flow can often leave listeners perplexed, while Vordul Mega’s stolid, on beat delivery and matter of fact lyricism is never dense or overly abstruse, and in fact recalls the unpretentious ghetto reportage of old school greats like Masta Ace. Mega’s talent for direct, thought provoking rhymes is brought to the fore on Megagraphitti, which features a set of progressive, but not overly dissonant beats that leave plenty of room for Mega’s distinctive voice to assert itself. Though Megagraphitti features a pair of collaborations with Vast Aire that attempt to resurrect Cannibal Ox’s explosive chemistry, the album is most successful when Vordul Mega is allowed room to rhyme on his own terms and explore his identity as a solo artist.

Best Album of 2008. There is nothing even in the same league as this album. Production is amazing. EL-P's best produced track in years is on Keep Living Bronze Nazareth produces a hot track on Trigganomics Bond adds some nice interludes Lyrics are unreal Vordul shows how amazing he can be on Megagraphitti, Opium Scripts, and Trigganomics billy woods is one of the best lyricists in the game and shows off on Opium Scripts, Imani, and Air Battery Vast Aire and Karniege (Mighty Joseph) are unbelievable in their featured roles. AK-47 is the return of Cannibal Ox! The Flow is on another level. Vordul has been criticized for his flow before, and at times it dragged on his solo stuff. That is done. This is unbelievable. I usually list the top-5 songs on the album for all you MP3 song downloaders. But, this album is too complete and too perfect to do that. This is untouchable in every way.

Backwoodz beautiful on this one.

That's right, by far the best release of '08. The production is beautiful so...stay conscious from those opium scripts and try not to get your halo broke by that hattori hanzo. Learn that amongst the havenots in the mirror is light.

The backwoodz goodz...

I love this album!  His past two solo albums seem like a theoretical basis for the explosion of concepts released in this one.  It takes a few close listens before you realize the depth of what Vordul talks about but it unfolds in an amazing way.  The guest appearances and beats are dope to top it off.  I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to quench their thirst for hip-hop in what seems to me to be a drought.  Big up backwoodz for dropping another classic!
