Album Review

Slower, smoother, and more soulful than Portishead and less pop-oriented than the Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba have an alluringly dark sound that nevertheless remains accessible. As their debut, Who Can You Trust?, illustrates, the trio has a keen sense of how to make a pop melody seem dangerous and foreign by having it crawl out of the murk of creeping beats and ominous samples. Although the group lacks the visionary spark of Tricky and Portishead, and their songs aren't as bracing as the Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba have a distinctive, idiosyncratic sound that makes Who Can You Trust? entrancing. Although the latter half of the album tends to sound a little samey, without many beats or hooks to distinguish each song, the album remains a hauntingly atmospheric — and quite terrific — debut.

Great Deal!

If you're not familiar with how hard Beats & B Sides is to buy on CD, let me tell you. It is impossible if you don't want to pay more than 40 dollars for a used copy w/o the box. This is Morcheeba's first CD and is worth the 11.99 by itself.

I am age 50-something and was turned onto Morcheeba by my daughter - I play this album constantly on my ipod, in the car, at my desk...wonderfully upbeat, soothing, mellow, and jazzy. I love all the tracks on the album however, if I had to choose only one it would have to be Moog Island although Small Town and Never An Easy Way are also big favorites. This whole album is wonderfully addictive!

Absolute must have!

Bestest of Best, Pioneers of the Ultra Chillout! Pure perfection... until something disaterous happened and the band morphed. For the worse. New singers for unbelievable bands never take a turn for the better. Buy all 4 albums before The Antidote was released right now!! You will not be sorry!

Formed: 1995 in London, England

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The most groove-oriented act in the mid-'90s female-fronted electronica crowd, Morcheeba rely on the sweet, fluid vocals of Skye Edwards and a laid-back mix of fusion, funk, and blues produced by brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey on beats/scratches and guitar/keyboards, respectively. The trio was formed in 1995 when the Godfreys decided to go out on their own after co-producing six tracks for David Byrne's album Feelings. They submitted several tapes of their instrumental demos to labels around London,...
