iTunes Review

Though Gary Moore established his reputation as a master of hard-rock guitar in the late-‘70s, with a short, influential stint in Thin Lizzy and then with a series of explosive showcase albums in the ‘80s (1982’s Corridors of Power, 1983’s Victims of the Future), it was 1990’s Still Got the Blues that shifted the guitar legend onto the path that he comfortably explores to this day. Close As You Get is the sound of the blues filtered through the hands and mind of an expert innovator whose love for Sonny Boy Williamson (covered here with “Eyesight to the Blind” and “Checkin’ Up On My Baby”) is wedded to his obsession with the electric blues of Peter Green and Jimi Hendrix. But while Moore can light up the sky with whiplash guitars runs, at heart he’s a man of strategy, leaving space, picking his spots for maximum drama as the slowly percolating “I Had a Dream” chillingly shows. As a bonus for Moore fans, the album closes with his first foray into acoustic blues with a cover of Son House’s “Sundown.”

Best Blues of the Decade

The first track pretty much sets the bar here; Mr. Moore throws down with a shuffle and the kind of slide guitar playin' that makes you glad to be alive. From there he jumps to Chicago, Texas, the Bayou, and various other places where the music is good. There's not a bad track on the album. In fact, there's not a single track that doesn't smoke, rock or otherwise rule. Hi-5, Gary.

I Had A Dream

One of Gary's most beautiful Ballads ever with a gorgeous solo to boot. Download that, Trouble at home and Evenin. Your $2.97 will take you a long way. I had A Dream should have been an instant classic even on the Radio. I guess even Gary Can't even bring eyesight to the blind. Whatever you do Download, I had a dream; It is perfect and will keep you wanting more Moore.

One of rock's most underrated guitarists (both from a technical and compositional point of view), Gary Moore remains relatively unknown in the U.S., while his solo work has brought him substantial acclaim and commercial success in most other parts of the world -- especially in Europe. Born on April 4, 1952, in Belfast, Ireland, Moore became interested in guitar during the '60s, upon discovering such blues-rock masters as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and perhaps his biggest influence of all, Fleetwood...
