Editors’ Notes

As a rock n' roll veteran who made his first splash with the psychedelic power of the Jefferson Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen has spent most of his career exploring the folk and blues that served as his initial inspiration. Whether with Hot Tuna or as a solo artist, Kaukonen has let his guitar picking do much of his talking, as his voice is of limited yet solid range, and this often works to his advantage. He writes songs to suit his strengths and picks covers with strong resonance, choosing for this 2009 collection tunes from bluesmen Mississippi John Hurt and Rev. Gary Davis and country legend Merle Haggard. The Band drummer Levon Helm provided the recording studio and joins in on drums. Producer Larry Campbell from Bob Dylan's band joins alongside mandolin expert Barry Mitterhoff to enhance the intimate, homespun acoustic vibe. Whether it's the Grateful Dead's "Operator," Davis' "There's a Bright Side Somewhere," or the standard "Trouble In Mind," Kaukonen plays everything with an unquestionable authority that places him as a premier blues practitioner.

Customer Reviews

Listening to this collection of mellow, almost sweet sounding rootsy, folk/blues, It's hard to believe Jorma was once the lead guitarest of one of rock and roll's greatest rabble rousing bands, The Jefferson Airplane. Airplane (way before it sold out and became Jefferson Starship) was among the forefront musically during the era of 60's drug/hippie/anti-war culture. They were NOT the band parents wanted their kids to hear blasting from their stereo systems in their bedrooms. Jorma went on to form a band called HOT TUNA, which put out albums-- both electric and acoustic-- exploring more blues-based music. His incredible guitar work and unique vocals make him one of rock music's all time greats. This album is more reminiscent of HOT TUNA's acoustic releases. Yet, there is a maturity to this music that surpasses anything Kaukonen has done least to these ears. Beautiful, acoustic guitar driven music, most with vocals (some duets with Teresa Williams), with a couple of instrumentals tossed in. If you want to hear something gorgeous, give this CD a listen. Jorma still has it!

Missed you...this is lovely!

Jorma one of the greatest guitarists of all time. And he's still rockin' out! Unbelieveable! Any Jefferson Airplane / Hot Tuna fans should look into this, I had no clue he was coming out with a new album but I'll get this, no doubt.

In 1965, Kaukonen became a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, which soared to fame in 1967. Though Kaukonen's songs and vocals were not prominently featured in the band, his distinctive guitar-playing was crucial to its sound. With bassist Jack Casady, Kaukonen...
