No Trouble with Tahiti

In this recording of Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti” the Radio Orchestra Munich gives a fine presentation. I wasn’t very familiar with this piece, but I was pleased to hear classic Bernstein. They give the listener all the swing and lilting melodies that you could want. The jazz trio of singers is a very nice departure from the sometimes thought provoking exchanges of the story’s main characters. The story itself is a passionate one, so I was really sucked into the lives of these people. It’s a very short piece, but certainly not lacking. The other half of the CD is comprised of the symphonic dances from “West Side Story”. The music is timeless, but I was yearning for a little more. I really wanted to hear some singing, especially with how good the other half was. Another thing that was a little off for my taste, was that each “WSS” piece was in a random order… It did not follow along the musical’s score at all. I got the impression that the symphonic dances were an afterthought. Other than that, “Trouble in Tahiti” alone is worth the cost.
