The backdrop for the HBO series True Blood (Based on Charlaine Harris’ The Southern Vampire Mysteries) is a fictional Louisiana bayou town. Jace Everett’s “Bad Things” sets a sinister tone with a mid-tempo rockabilly swagger slithering under Everett’s sultry baritone. Lee Dorsey’s 1966 hit “Give It Up” fuses psychedelic sitar with the Meters’ unmistakable New Orleans funk as produced by Allen Toussaint, but the soundtrack wears Toussaint’s eerie and slow-burning “From a Whisper to a Scream” like a well-tailored glove. The Watson Twins contribute to the spooky vibe with an ethereally twangy take on the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” and it's very cool to hear the Flying Burrito Brothers’ “Christine’s Tune (Devil In Disguise)” in the context of a backwoods vampiress. Little Big Town’s “Bones” and John Doe’s “The Golden State” are two standouts – the former sounding like a hillbilly Fleetwood Mac and the latter a gripping country rock duet with Kathleen Edwards. The Deluxe version features three live CC Adcock tunes, though the real treat here is a live version of Zac Brown’s “Whiskey’s Gone.”
It ain't half bad, t'ain't half good neither...
The show is great (A), the books are pretty good (B-), but the soundtrack here... is just ok (C+). There are some good tracks (such as the ironically titled Bad Things) and bad (Just Like Heaven, which, equally ironic isn't like Heaven... at least this version, it's a snore (give me the Cure anyday)). I don't get when iTunes (or the record label, or whichever dumba executive) decides to make tracks Album Only. Look people, we live in a Singles Age. Give me one song I can play on my iPod. We're here on iTunes because we want to legally pay for our tracks, would you rather we just go back to the days when we'd pirate our music (arrr me mateys)? It's especially laughable when many tracks (such as Bad Things, Give It Up, Swampblood, Just Like Heaven, and more) can be searched separately here on iTunes and purchased for $0.99 each (and we can then easily edit the Album title to say "True Blood Soundtrack" and use the Intarnets to find the cover art, iffin we really wanted). So get over yourselves and stop with the Album Only waste of time. Overall this should be a Three Star album, but I'm giving it one because of the AO joke.
A decent effort, but want MORE
An OK effort, but so many truly iconic and meaningful songs from the series have been omitted. In addition to the songs mentioned by the other reviewers, I would love to have seen "Cold Ground" by Rusty Truck, Hem's "We'll Meet Along the Way" and "Take Me Home" by Lisbeth Scott and Nathan Barr. A REALLY great idea would be to issue the "True Blood" soundtrack, including those beautiful and haunting Nathan Barr cello (and piano) pieces, like "Bill and Sookie's Love Theme" or "Bill's Entrance".
God I love this show! I love the laid back feeling of this soundtrack. It fits right in with the show. There's a lot of music on here that I don't remember being on the show, but that said, all of the music goes with the sometimes lazy, sometimes frenetic pace of the show. It's easy to imagine the characters driving around the bayou with any of these songs blasting on their car radios. If you're even a slight fan of "True Blood," I'd definitely recommend it.
