Trouble

A split with a long-term girlfriend inspired much of Matt Terry’s debut album. It’s far from sorrowful though. The 2016 X Factor winner has emerged from his heartbreak as an assured singer of kinetic R&B-pop. With impressive vocal range, he distills his romantic trials into defiant self-belief on “Original,” a reggae-tinged collaboration with RedOne, while the slinky “Sucker for You” aligns admissions of weakness with crisp trap drums. Meanwhile, “Heartless” demonstrates he can still do an emotive ballad with poise and confidence.
