Album Review

Jale's utterly infectious So Wound is a manic pop thrill, a superb collection of sweet-and-sour songs laced with wit, intelligence and poignancy. Crisply produced by Brad Wood, the record's 14 tracks (13 listed, one bonus) are fresh and sassy, combining the sweet harmonies and gleaming songcraft of the girl-group era with post-punk attitude and edge; while each song is a gem, the chiming "All Ready," the buzzing "Ali" and the snotty "Over You" are standouts.

Overlooked pop gem

This is one of the best releases ever on the venerable Sub Pop label. It's a huge leap forward from the band's previous album, Dreamcake, as the four women in the band have learned their instruments and much tighter songcraft. The songs are catchy, jangly and almost universally upbeat, the harmonies are impressive and the lyrics are above-average. Unfortunately, if you like this album, there really isn't anything else to get by the band. The first album was merely OK, and the band ceased to exist after this album. Three of the four members did release a four-track EP called The Vees EP that was solid; it's not to be confused with the work by another band apparently also called The Vees.

A product of the same Halifax, Nova Scotia musical community which spawned Sloan and Eric's Trip, the sparkling indie-pop band Jale formed in April 1992 while its members were attending art school. Dubbing themselves Jale as an acronym of the first names of guitarist Jennifer Pierce, drummer Alyson MacLeod, bassist Laura Stein and guitarist Eve Hartling (all of whom shared vocal and songwriting chores), the group borrowed their instruments from friends and played their first show less than five weeks...
