A sign of things to come

I'll freely admit I've been in love with Ingrid Michaelson's music since the first time I heard her voice in 2007. Out of thousands of CDs I own, Ingrid's "Girls and Boys" is among my most precious (and most played). That said, with the release of "Be OK," I was concerned that Ingrid would fall into the trap of another of my favorite bands - DMB. That is, everything would start to sound the same. With the release of Turn to Stone, Ingrid gives us a glimpse of what is to come from her upcoming album and puts to rest any fear that Ms. Michaelson is a one trick pony. Turn to Stone is more sophisticated and nuanced than what we've heard before, but it retains that inexplicable quality that made Girls and Boys accessible and personal. Her pure voice still shines through, but is now accompanied by a sweeping chorus of piano, strings, and (who saw this coming?) sax. Five stars. Highly recommended. I can't wait to see Ingrid play her new stuff on this year's Hotel Cafe Tour. Keep up the good work, Ing.

This song gave me chills

I heard it on Grey's Anatomy, then waited up until midnight to buy it. I liked it on Grey's, but listening to this song by itself was an incredible experience. The beauty of Ingrid's voice, plus the orchestration of the song literally gave me goosebumps. Simply amazing.

Buy this track before it "Turns to Stone."

While this track did not make the cut for her new album (which comes out later this year), it has a voice of its own, and a pleasant melody. The first minute of the song is dedicated to a beautiful piano melody, and is joined by gentle harmonizing voices in the background. It is reminiscent of her first album, Slow the Rain—which was predominantly piano-driven melodies with a gentle touch—and has a similar feel to the track “Breakable” on her album Boys and Girls. However, similar to more recent work like "Keep Breathing," this track explodes into a passionate burst of song during the final minute. The lyrics are touching, and remind us that some opportunities should be seized "before we turn to stone." This song aired May 7th on the 100th episode of Grey's Anatomy and played as Isobel Stevens and Alex Karev were joined in marriage— an opportunity that definitely needed to be seized before Izzie "turns to stone." If this track didn't make it to her new album, we can only anticipate even more amazing material to come. Once again, Ingrid Michaelson delivers.

With her piano-fueled songwriting, witty wordplay, and slight vocal vibrato, Ingrid Michaelson carried the tradition of the female singer/songwriter into the 21st century.
