iTunes Editors’ Notes

The Byrds were one of the most important and influential groups of the 1960s. From their brilliant beginning electrifying the Bob Dylan catalog (“Mr. Tambourine Man,” “All I Really Want to Do,” “My Back Pages”) to their own psychedelic explorations (“Eight Miles High,” “Mr. Spaceman”) to the reflective and mature country-folk influenced material (“The Ballad of Easy Rider”), the Byrds constantly withstood the changes of the musical climate and initiated many new directions for others to follow, and this despite (or arguably because of) shuffling line-ups. This 20-track collection sums things up neatly, if inevitably incompletely (there’s a reason it took an entire box set to sum up their career). However, as a shorthand compilation, it hits many of the highlights and introduces a few unexpected gems as well, including David Crobsy’s “Lady Friend” and several tunes that were included specifically for the 1990 box set, including new takes of Dylan’s “Paths of Victory” and a new tune “Love That Never Dies.”

An Excellent Career Overview...

This is an excellent overview of the career of the Byrds. Personally, I do not care for track 19 "From a Distance", but other than substituting "Just A Season" or "Gunga Din" in it's place; any new listener will find the high points in the career of the Byrds on this single disc (or more properly - download).

Turn! Turn! Turn!

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s

Although they only attained the huge success of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys for a short time in the mid-'60s, time has judged the Byrds to be nearly as influential as those groups in the long run. They were not solely responsible for devising folk-rock, but they were certainly more responsible than any other single act (Dylan included) for melding the innovations and energy of the British Invasion with the best lyrical and musical elements of contemporary folk music. The jangling,...
