Album Review

Given a higher profile by her exposure on the Comedians of Comedy tours and documentaries alongside friends Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, and Zach Galifianakis, Maria Bamford has moved up a few levels in terms of exposure and general hipness. Luckily, her material has elevated as well. Bamford's first album, The Burning Bridges Tour, overemphasized the comedian's cartoony aspects, most notably a voice that makes her sound like Betty Boop's neurotic sister. That trait is modulated on How to Win, and Bamford's material takes a less insular turn, focusing on more social and political topics in routines like "I Heart My Country" and "Competitive Living." Even her more personal material takes a different shape, including some amusingly dark turns like the hilarious "Sister Sarah," a description of her older sister's work as a pathologist. Or, as Bamford sweetly introduces her, "This is my sister Sarah. She cuts up the dead into chunks." Bamford is a low-key comedian more interested in the wry observation than the manic belly laugh, which makes odd digressions like the tour de force soundtrack of old man body noises in "Dad" all the more surprising and funny.

Smart and refreshing and fun

Maria Bamford is such a refeshing voice in alternative comedy today. She doesn't get too dirty or too angry. She never insults her audience. She manages the most difficult of feats - bringing us into the world as she sees it and making us laugh. Her impressions astound, but she is so much more than "voices". Her jokes are expertly crafted, smart and fun. Listening to her is inspiring and renews my faith that comedy can be both hilarious and absurd and nice.

Hurry! Don't Miss The Genius Train!

You're missing out unless you've seen her Comedy Central Special(second one). I haven't! But even if I went to the past with a flux capicitor and 1.21 jigawatts and saw that Special, I would still want this in my library to remind my future self craziness is next to comediness...whatever, just know that this one's for the books....the future books!

i like to help other people...while being televised

loved this, loved the Burning Bridges Tour even more...i'd recommend both..."just tell your father to pick up the rug-cleaner"

Think of her as the hilarious woman with a million voices or the surreal comedian with a million anxieties, standup comedian and voice-over artist Maria Bamford was born on a naval base in Port Hueneme, California but was raised in Duluth, Minnesota. She started performing standup in Minneapolis at the age of 19 and would work temp jobs during the day. One temp job for the Nickelodeon cable television network evolved into a full-time gig performing voices on the popular cartoon CatDog. A big break...
