EDITORS’ NOTES

Bing Crosby’s collaborations with The Andrews Sisters resulted in some of the most spirited, smile-inducing recordings of his long and productive career. This 20-track album gathers together their six holiday-themed collaborations, interspersed with songs recorded by Bing and the Sisters separately. From must-have hits like “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” and “Jingle Bells” to lesser-known gems like “Poppa Santa Claus” and “Merry Christmas Polka,” there’s plenty of sparkling vocal interplay and general good cheer to be found in these selections. “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a particular high point, with Patty, LaVerne, and Maxene Andrews blending with Bing to create a swirling parfait of sound. On his own, Crosby offers yuletide numbers that are by turns sentimental (“O Fir Tree Dark,” “Is Christmas Only a Tree”), nostalgic (“Christmas in Killarney”), and smoothly swinging (“Looks Like a Cold, Cold Winter”). The Andrews Sisters come through with stylish renditions of such tunes as “The Christmas Tree Angel,” “Winter Wonderland,” and the tropical-accented “Christmas Island.”
