Back in the ‘80's young vampires had it pretty good when it came to identifying with music. England provided tunes in spades with the likes of Bauhaus, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Dead Can Dance, and of course there was no band better for flipping dyed-black bangs out of one's eyes than The Cure. Moving forward, the outstanding 2008 soundtrack to Twilight proved that in the 21st century there is indeed a viable music market for pubescent bloodsuckers in love. The opening "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse shows that just because you're dark and melancholic doesn't mean that you can't be stylishly funky. But it's the Black Ghosts who truly set the tone with the hip and haunting "Full Moon," a folky strum-n-bass number overflowing with elegant sweeping cellos and violas. And although Linkin Park's melodramatic "Leave Out All the Rest" and Paramore's overly emotive "I Caught Myself" might be better suited for One Tree Hill, Perry Farrell and Collective Soul's infectious contributions remind us that vampires like dancing too. Iron & Wine's "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" is easily the prettiest song here.
Bella's Lullaby should just be a piano piece. Edward wasn't playing ten other intruments when he performed that for Bella. It was just piano. Simple, but beautiful. Is that really that hard? Also, iTunes needs to make more then one song available without the album. That's why I'm only giving it two stars. The soundtrack needs more Muse. They're Stephenie's favorite group and they have multiple songs on Stephenie's playlists for the books. For there to only be one song by them is absurd.
Not bad, not bad at all!
This soundtrack was surprisingly good! Supermassive Black Hole - This song has always been one of my favorites. If you've never heard Muse before, go. Buy their albums. Now. 10/10 Decode - This song isn't just amazing, it's beautiful! Paramore wrote this song specifically for this movie. It's perfect, and one of my favorite Paramore songs. 10/10 Full Moon - Very…different. But unique. And Twilight is unique, right? Also pretty sounding! 9/10 Leave Out All the Rest - Linkin Park never fails to make me smile. This song is really good for this movie. 9/10 Spotlight - I love Mute Math! They're a new band, and an awesome one nonetheless! They also never fail to make me smile. Now go buy their album as well. 10/10 Go All the Way - Very dance-sounding, like something you’d here at a club. Definitely mixes the soundtrack up a bit, and the lyrics are great! 9/10 Tremble for My Beloved - this song was on Stephenie's playlist, so that obviously makes it awesome for this soundtrack. 9/10 I Caught Myself - Aha, what is this? Yet ANOTHER new Paramore song? Yes! Absolutely perfect. Hayley’s voice is so beautiful in this song. And the lyrics? You guessed it, perfect. 10/10 Eyes On Fire – Good lyrics for this story! Definitely interesting sounding. 8/10 Never Think – One of my least favorites on the album. An acoustic track, very pretty. A little too mushy for this story, though. 6/10 Flightless Bird, American Mouth – It’s acoustic, and very mellow sounding, but also a bit…I don’t know, quiet? I really can’t explain it. Just my opinion. 7/10 Bella’s Lullaby – Not exactly how I pictured it, for sure. Too dramatic. It’s supposed to be primarily piano, right? Well, this has other orchestral instruments. Still pretty, though! But like Stephenie Meyer said, it would have been fantastic if Matthew Bellamy (of Muse) had composed it. Let Me Sign – Another song by Rob Pattinson. Just so-so. 6/10 La Traviata – Very happy sounding. Also an opera…blech. 5/10 Clair de Lune – It is so perfect that they added this! I mean, c’mon! The whole, "Clair de Lune?" ... “You listen to Debussy?” moment was a classic. 10/10 The album has made me satisfied, now let's hope the movie does too!
I must say I do love this soundtrack, however I was disappointed with the choice for "Bella's Lullaby." The song itself feels like it has too much going on and enjoyed the internet leaked one much more. Twilight the movie is going to be action and romance packed. With that in mind, i'm glad to see it has a great soundtrack to back it up.
