Editors’ Notes

This 21-year-old Texas singer/songwriter combines an almost angelic vocal purity with an obsessive lyric fascination with seduction, escape and unrequited need. Whether Smith is a pure-toned songbird or a fever-wracked poet, her overall excellence is made clear in these haunting tracks. Producer Emile Kelman (a T-Bone Burnett protégé) wraps the songs in loose skeins of atmosphere, enlisting such notables as guitarists Marc Ribot and Greg Leisz to create a sultry Southwestern ambiance. Smith commands the spotlight with a sometimes wistful, sometimes determined air, beckoning with brazen desire in “The Real Thing” and longing for elusive yesterdays in “Mermaid.” Her lyrics often achieve a surreal intensity, even when matched with gauzy, downcast melodies — songs like “Thousand Secrets,” “Tin Man Town” and “Train Man” make the listener see, feel and taste the small town world around her. “All I Need” and the title tune are relatively carefree in tone, though the dominant tone here is bittersweet.

Beautiful and gritty

Sahara Smith's first album is an intriguing combination of gritty and pretty. A bit like the Cowboy Junkies, combined with Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. In spite of those comparisons, it sounds fresh, and is wonderfully intelligent.

Incredible emerging singer/songwriter

Sahara Smith is a wonderful emerging artist, first album although she has been performing for a few years. Have seen her live in Austin, TX, and she is an exceptionally talented singer/songwriter with a wonderful spirit and soulfulness, beautiful voice. Just received the CD, highly recommended here or on CD, just beautiful.

Still gives me goosebumps...

Sahara Smith has been performing in small restaurants in Texas for years. I saw her live when she was fourteen at a restaurant in Wimberley, TX and her voice gave me goosebumps. My favorite song at the time was an original song she wrote when she was very young titled, Twilight Red. I have been waiting her to release a CD for nigh a decade, and it does not disappoint!
After listening to this CD, I can tell her musical talent has only grown, and her voice still gives me chills every time she sings Twilight Red.
