Album Review

The most immediately obvious aspect of the Gits' debut album, Frenching the Bully, is Mia Zapata's righteous, feminist-tinged punk rage. Her songs wind their way through tales of deception, insecurity, failed relationships, and hard drinking, while her hoarse, husky voice supports the combination of toughness and vulnerability projected in her lyrics. Even if Zapata's meanings are occasionally a bit obscure, and even if a few songs seem to lack adequate melodicism, Frenching the Bully is an invigorating piece of punk rock. [The 2003 reissue on Broken Rekids is remixed by Jack Endino and adds "Spear and Magic Helmet" to tracklisting of the original album as well as eight songs recorded live in Portland taken from a June, 1993 show and the single version of "Twisting"]

What happened to you should have never happened. Glad they caught the c**k sucker. I know ur rocking in heaven. Wonderful album.

An era ended

Truth be told, Kurt Cobains death was not the end of Grunge...rather, it was the murder of Mia Zapata. Kurts demise was forseen, and those who say otherwise were blind. Yet Mia`s death totally took away the unbridled angst, purity of sound and enjoyment of music that all Seattle bands enjoyed for so many years. It wasn`t the same. Music wasn`t the same. Grunge was dead. Seattle was left cold, once again, and nothing since has filled it`s void. No, The Gits weren`t the best musicians on the block, but their energy was unparalled. Buy this and respect it as an ending testement of a fantastic era...and more importantly so that we never forget Mia

The Gits Rock!!

I agree with you... Its a shame. The Gits is a great band and I suggest buying this album.

Formed: 1986 in Seattle, WA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s

While the Gits were a band who made a strong impression with their music during their all too brief run, it was how the group suddenly ended that would come to dominate their story. Playing a unique and passionate fusion of first-era punk, hard rock, and streetwise blues, the Gits had a sound that set them apart from their peers in Seattle in the late '80s and early '90s, when the city was hip deep in the grunge explosion. The Gits also had a fearless and charismatic frontwoman in lead singer Mia...
