Album Review

This LP from the collectors' label Bandstand Records has two live performances from Harry James and his Orchestra during 1944. At the time James was at the height of his popularity and his ensemble included a full string section. Kitty Kallen and Buddy Di Vito take a few vocals but it is the instrumentals (particularly "Just You, Just Me," "I Cover the Waterfront" and "Cherry") that are of greatest interest.

Harry James was one of the most outstanding instrumentalists of the swing era, employing a bravura playing style that made his trumpet work instantly identifiable. He was also one of the most popular bandleaders of the first half of the 1940s, and he continued to lead his band until just before his death, 40 years later.
