Editors’ Notes

After selling more than 100,000 copies of his independently released debut, The Leprechaun, Lil’ Flip was quickly signed by a division of Columbia Records and released his first major-label album in 2002. Undaground Legend was boosted by the hit single “The Way We Ball,” a song that epitomizes Flip’s ability to blend the catchiness of nursery rhymes with the attitude of gangsta rap. The other choruses on the album leave a lot to Flip’s magnetic flow and his vivid vignettes of ghetto culture. Some of his best writing can be heard on “8 Rulez,” which is propelled by a burping brass band–inspired beat—a hint of Flip’s love for the culture of New Orleans. As a lyricist, Flip could always come up with a new twist on an old idea—hear him boast of “sleeping on an iceberg bed” in “U See It”—but fans respected him because he could tell a story straight from the heart. The album’s centerpiece is “RIP Screw,” which in two short verses (and a chorus from the incomparable Bizzy Bone) tells the entire story of Flip and his mentor, DJ Screw.
