Editors’ Notes

Born and raised in San Francisco, Watsky hit the scene as a slam poet/spoken-word artist, winning various awards and appearing on HBO's Def Poetry Jam in 2006. A few years later, after graduating from Boston's Emerson College, he found YouTube fame with a viral video of him speed-rapping, leading to a performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He's since released several EPs, mixtapes, and collaborations. Cardboard Castles is his second official studio album, following his 2009 self-titled debut. Rocking a stereotypical white-guy voice, he delivers rapid-fire verses heavy on the humor, with plenty of pop culture references and absolutely no fake gangster/wannabe drug-lord shenanigans. The production (from Kush Mody, Mikos, and Daniel J. W!shington) is charmingly unpredictable, a mish-mash of random genres that fits perfectly with Watsky's proudly goofy rhymes about cheese fries, hipsters, Volvos, smartphones, and Star Wars. He's kind of like the bastard child of Eminem and MC Paul Barman.

Customer Reviews

Watsky Is Real

He is as real as they come. Lyric master and entertainer. I highly recommend this album.

A Pleasant Surprise

I'm not really a rap fan, but I've fallen in love with all the tracks on this album. The beats are great, and the lyrics either make you laugh or make you really stop and think. This album is wonderful.

Fantastic Album by a Spectacular Artist

What can be said about such an amazing album? The lyrics are very intelligent and insightful, the overall concept of the album is inspirational! Gah, I just love Watsky and this album!

If you are unsure, just listen to Sloppy Seconds. It is the best song he has ever done and is just so perfect in and of itself!

Born: San Francisco , CA

Years Active: '10s

Like so many rappers before him, Watsky owes a bit of thanks to Def Jam founder Russell Simmons, but unlike the others, this slam-poet-turned-rapper was introduced to the world via the HBO television series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry. Born George Virden Watsky in San Francisco, the teen won numerous poetry slams in the Bay Area. A move to Boston for college coincided with national poetry slam tours; in 2007, he teamed with Daniel Riera and Max Miller-Loran — both former San Franciscans...
