iTunes Review

On one hand, this 28-track collection takes a pretty straightforward approach to anthologizing Prince's biggest hits. All the heaviest hitters are here, from the frothy, funky "1999" and the giddy synth-pop sunburst "Delirious" to the sui generis minimalist/modernist masterpiece "When Doves Cry" and the gospel–goes–New Jack "7." At the same time, some of Prince's highest-charting tunes are represented by extended mixes that were previously available only as 12-inch singles, and some of them lend a whole different spin to what would otherwise have been familiar songs. "Let's Go Crazy," for instance, does indeed get pretty unhinged-sounding, shifting into several wildly divergent directions. The extra synth on "Kiss" adds an almost jazz fusion feel, while "Raspberry Beret" has some appropriately psych-popppy interplay between the string section and finger cymbals. Overall, Ultimate: Prince balances between encompassing what's expected and uncovering what isn't.

Hot Incomplete Collection

Giving it only 3 stars because supposedly, the original mastertapes were not used but rather the old CD production tapes were used...or was it the old Warner Brothers Records glass masters, anyway, yeah, they were just re-equalized, made to sound hotter and louder. If my memory serves me right, you can hear some kind of error on one of the tracks that matches an older release, something like that, I forget exactly, but its a documented fan find. Also, missing is the 20 plus minute long version of America, a '85 single, the UK 12 inch version of Pop Life which was probably the original long studio version. There's Anotherloverholenyohead 12 inch remix, where's Mountains 12 inch version? ♥ or $? God? 7 Minutes Mo' Quake? Gotta Stop? Just Another Lover remix? Partyman long versions? I Wish U Heaven...! I can go on and on...Erotic City? Wait...Erotic City, oh yes! That reminds me - Prince was involved in choosing the tracks and "dirty", "nasty" songs since he's now a more religious person, didnt make it on to the set. Feel U Up? Ha! Never. Prince is starting to fade in the general publics memory, he's done so much brilliant work, its a shame that editing like that and lack of really putting together something that celebrates and makes you appreciate his classic work is contributing to that. Prince deserves either a huge box set or a full on double disc remasters special edition treatment - all his Warner Brothers Records from debut through Come/Gold Experience, throw it all in there, outtakes, 12 inch singles, original Crystal Ball discs would rock Sign O The Times. But it may be too late. Sigh. But for those that dont care and just want the NASTY Prince jamming the box - here's another glass 4 U, this time on the rocks!

Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums, wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince showed remarkable stylistic growth...
