iTunes Review

After establishing himself in Christian music circles some years back, Matt Wertz seems poised to take a leap into the secular mainstream. Under Summer Sun features the best cuts from his last two albums along with newly-recorded tracks, and taken together these tunes present the Missouri-bred singer/songwriter as a footloose young romantic in the mold of John Mayer, Jason Mraz and (especially) Dave Barnes. As a vocalist, Wertz’s breathy delivery and softly rhythmic phrasing lend a laid-back appeal to “Marianne,” “Everything’s Right,” “5:19” and other pop-rock exercises. The tracks benefit from uncluttered production, veering from sparse folk-pop (“Back In June”) to inviting light funk (“The Way I Feel”) to balmy disco-inflected grooves (“Summer Sun”). With the exception of the uplifting “Keep Faith” and the solemn “I Will Not Take My Love Away,” the songs generally avoid explicit spiritual language. Wertz’s boyishly disarming persona shines best on “Waiting,” a quietly confessional piece set to a delicately wrought melody line. Under Summer Sun feels undemanding in some places but deserves kudos overall for its breezy musicality and warmhearted vibe.

Customer Reviews

I like it, I love it, I want some more-... Well, maybe a little different?

I was kind of expecting atleast newer productions of the older stuff. Just seems like maybe they re-mixed some of it. Matt Wertz is AMAZING, no doubt. And if you haven't heard him before, he did a great job of picking out his best hits of the previous two albums to put on this one. I like the 3 new songs. They are great. But if you have the previous albums, I would just buy the 3 new songs. As far as the bonus tracks... I was pretty surprised when I heard the first "Some One Like You". It sounds like a good acoustic production! Mixed well. But then the rest of the bonus tracks seems like a crowdless live recording, with the vocals a tab bit too high. To be honest, they could have put more effort into this release. But, I'm still a fan. Still bought it. Still listening. Still love it. Bottom Line: Just Discovering Wertz? BUY THIS!

Best Qualities of a Musician and Person In One

Under Summer Sun is the best combination of where Matt has been and where he is headed. Re-recordings of "old songs" such as 5:19 and Carolina add a refined feel to already great songs while new songs like Summer Sun and Back In June exhibit his ever growing talent and passion for good song writting. If his lyrical and instrumental skills were not enough, his interactions with and dedication to his fans is second to none. He truly delivers music for the people and for music's sake, not self promotion or personal gain. I cannot think of an artist who deserves more fortune than Matt Wertz. Pick up his new album, you wont regret it, and while you are at it check out his charity the Mocha Club. Can't wait to see him in concert on October 4th.
