Groundbreaking Music (in its time)

Despite theiry dorky look (it was the 80s. . .), First Call was a landmark recording group in the Christian music world of the 1980s. Having done studio work ("first call" background singers) for a number of years, they set out on their own with this CD. The first two songs are great--"Undivided" is a modern classic--and set the tone for what's to come. "Bless Ye the Lord" and "God is Greater" are both striking, though on opposite ends of the musical spectrum. The variety of styles on the next four songs is amazing. I can't think of any other group, other than Take 6, who can match their diversity. They clearly use their eclectic backgrounds, collectively and individually, to blaze a variety of paths. "Just as True for You" is a very nice way to end the CD, with a word of encouragement and brotherhood for those listening. When they recorded this CD, they were still singing backgroud vocals for Sandy Patti on her tour. I was fortunate enough to see both. I have listened to more First Call music than Patti's through the years. . . . They moved on to SOMETHING TAKES OVER, which iTunes really should have. It is a stunning collection that raised the bar for themselves and set the bar for every other Christian recording artist--state of the art musicianship, arrangements, and lyrics. Their Christmas CDs, AN EVENING IN DECEMBER, Vol. 1 & 2, are the best Christmas CDs out there, with Michael W. Smith, Bryan Duncan, and Amy Grant in the conversation. For Tracks, start with #2, #4, #1 and #5. If you like what you hear, try the rest.
