iTunes Review

Perennial indie-rap favorite, MF DOOM has amassed a gigantic catalog and fawning global fanbase ever since reinventing himself as the metal-faced super-villain in the late ‘90s. He's scored underground hits with quality solo albums under multiple aliases (King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Metal Fingaz) and various collaborative projects (Madvillain, Dangerdoom) alike, all the while maintaining his signature style of raspy flows, complex reference-heavy lyricism, and jazz-touched sample-based production. On Unexpected Guests, he compiles 18 tracks of random guest appearances, little-heard collaborations, obscure remixes, and vinyl-only joints. The visiting talent assembled on here in impressive in itself; Dilla, Vast Aire, Talib Kweli, and Masta Killa all appear, while standout selections include "Quite Buttery" (from Count Bass D's Dwight Spitz), "Angels" with Ghostface, "Yikes" with Scienz of Life, and "?" featuring longtime homie Kurious, originally released on the classic Operation: Doomsday. A dope compilation from one of the game's most unique MCs.

A Must Cop

Patterning his persona and logo after the Marvel Comics super villain Dr. Doom, the man behind MF (Metal Face) Doom's iron mask is actually Daniel Dumile, aka Zevlove X, a member of former Big Apple hip-hoppers K.M.D. First featured on the 3rd Bass single "The Gas Face," the London-born, Long Island-raised Zev made his debut with K.M.D. a couple of years later, along with his younger brother and musical partner, DJ Sub-Roc. The 1991 album Mr. Hood, released on Elektra Records, was part of a short-lived...
