iTunes Editors’ Notes

With its third album, the Las Vegas band Escape the Fate delivered harder attacks that put the core back in metalcore. But its following album, 2013's Ungrateful, finds the denim- and leather-clad quintet returning to the more melodic style of 2008’s This War Is Ours. John Feldmann, who produced that album, also sat in the mixing chair for Ungrateful, which may be why the opening title track familiarly balances muscle and melody. This is also the band’s first album without bassist Max Green. His replacement—TJ Bell from Motionless in White—brings a noticeably bigger bottom-end tone to the equation. In "Live Fast, Die Beautiful," Bell’s bass rumbles under the vitriolic lyrics of frontman Craig Mabbitt, giving the song a more driving and propulsive velocity. When drummer Robert Ortiz locks into a tight groove with Bell—as heard in the standout rocker “You’re Insane”—they have an uncanny rhythmic relationship that drives the band harder and faster than on previous recordings. Of the deluxe version’s three bonus tracks, “Losing Control” is the most ferocious.

The band's formation was propelled in part by MySpace, which vocalist Ronnie Radke and bassist Max Green utilized while searching for new bandmembers after their previous group's demise. The networking site allowed them to recruit guitarist Bryan Money, who subsequently brought along Vegas transplant (and former Lovehatehero guitarist)...
