Album Review

Unhallowed, the debut full-length from Detroit, MI, quintet the Black Dahlia Murder is a well-executed slice of melodic death/black metal in the tradition of Swedish masters Dissection and At the Gates. They've clearly studied those bands, as is reflected in the racing, dual-harmonized guitar riffs that form the foundation of this album. The vocals are a little different, though, consisting of a high-pitched shriek that's complemented by a lower, more standard death metal growl. Also of note is the drumming, which is pretty swift, even by this genre's standards. This band has a lot of youthful energy and chops and has the potential to do something great.

YUMMY

This is so good that if it was something I could eat...I would totally eat it

Listen to this more than once

I, like most people, took a while to get to know this album, but after about the 3rd spin I just couldnt take it out. This is amazing, the guitars are extremely technical, as are the drums, and the vocals are just insane (to say the least). Anyway, if you like your metal fast and to the point, with some spine tingling melodic moments (not to sound sissy, just check out Elder Misathropy and u'll know what i mean) buy this NOW.

An Amazing Melodic Death Metal Album

This is the perfect example of what brutal and melodic metal should sound like today. With amazing blastbeats and double vocal pitches, along with the undeniable guitars, this is definitely worth your money. It is also a breath of fresh air. Original, talented, and flawless, this album will grow on to you. It grew on to me. Highly recommended.

Detroit's the Black Dahlia Murder, named for the infamous 1947 slaying of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short, aka the Black Dahlia, actually sounds like they should live in Scandinavia, whence originates much of the frenetic brand of death and black metal that inspires them. Formed in January 2001, the Black Dahlia Murder followed their six-song What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse demo with the four-track A Cold-Blooded Epitaph EP, which was released on their own Lovelost Records.
