iTunes Editors’ Notes

One of the founding members of Atlanta Snap pioneers D4L, Shawty Lo helped the group achieve national recognition with his business savvy and low key, half whispered delivery. Though a jail sentence prevented Shawty from appearing on D4L’s breakthrough single “Laffy Taffy,” Shawty’s performances on D4L’s debut full-length proved him to be one of the groups most charismatic members. On his solo debut, Units in the City, Shawty Lo kicks simple, catchy rhymes over insistent, bare bones Atlanta production. Though his flow is rudimentary by the exacting standards of East Coast Rap, Shawty is a viscerally affecting and fearless performer whose sing song delivery hearkens back to the style favored by pioneering, vocal oriented old school groups like the Fantastic Four and the Cold Crush Brothers. On tracks like “Feels Good To Be Here” and “That’s Shawty Lo,” Shawty eschews the tongue twisting, punchline based aesthetic of Golden Age rap for a disarmingly direct style that emphasizes simplicity and clarity over technical virtuosity. Units In the City possesses a heartfelt and understated charm that should resonate with fans of unpolished, homegrown hip-hop.

Customer Reviews

Another one (yaaaawwnnn).

I can't believe hip-hop has gotten so corny. I watched videos this weekend for the first time in a while, and it amazes me how everyone dresses alike, sounds alike, videos EXACTLY the same, etc...that used to be called bitin' (what happened to that rule?). Whether it's this guy, Boosie, Weebie, Joc, Jeezy, Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, whatever. Everyone is trying to be like everyone else. Creativity and artistry has completely taken a back seat to illiterate, one-dimensional nursery rhyming. Damn I miss hip-hop.

Album is banging!!!

I got the sub woofers acting a straight fool with this one. Shawty got mad swagger, his flow may be ABC but his style is active because he rides the 808 like what!

what?

allright, this is not very good shawty lo, stay with d4l, and at least get fabo on this album, he makes the group only ok songs are aint tellin u and cut the check DO NOT BUY THE WHOLE ALBUM

Biography

Born: Atlanta, GA

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Atlanta-born and bred trap rapper Shawty Lo, aka Carlos Walker, did not reach national prominence with his street-hustling raps, but by ushering in the "snap dance" craze with the Billboard-topping "Laffy Taffy" as part of his four-man crew, D4L, in 2005. He co-founded both the group and, acting as CEO, the D4L Records label two years earlier with the intention of only working behind the scenes and never really contributing many verses to the group. D4L's debut single, "Betcha Can't Do It Like Me,"...
