Editors’ Notes

This acoustic live collection culled from seven concerts throughout 2007-08 in the U.S. and Europe featuring Mark Kozelek and guitarist Phil Carney is another perfect example of the soft, illuminating, highly personal folk music that Kozelek has been quietly amassing over the years with Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon. His studio albums sport powerful electronics and guitars that often bleed and feedback, but taken into the quiet club setting Kozelek’s mesmerizing voice takes hold and the overwhelming melancholy that aches within the joys of “Moorestown,” “Lucky Man,” and “Katy Song” rises to the surface. His covers remain idiosyncratic. Stephen Sondheim’s “Send In the Clowns” retains its melody while the Modest Mouse covers of “Four Fingered Fisherman” and “Tiny Cities” are recreated in Kozelek’s own imagined image. The album is heavy on songs from his most recent studio release 2008’s April and even there Kozelek twists the results with minor alterations that prove he is always seeking the freshest emotional resonance from his material.

Customer Reviews

Mark is the best

Very pristine recording. Awe-inspiring songs and musicianship. That voice. My absolute favorite singer/songwriter. I really wish I could go to a concert of Mark's. or his band, Sun Kil Moon. I love the Red House Painters, too. Simply beautiful and musical in every way.

Music you need to have in your life

In a hectic, fast-paced life with a thousand superficial things demanding my attention, I really value anything that can make me stop and slow down and just FEEL. Listening to this album for the first time on a noisy metro train, the crowd around me faded away and I was completely transfixed by the power and beauty of these songs. The pristine sound quality on this album lets you hear every note, every syllable, in an intimate little coccoon of sound that recreates the feeling of being at a Mark Kozelek show, right down to the sly stage banter. If you're already a fan, you need this album. If you're not, check out track #2. You need this album, too.

Amazing.... As Always.

To many good things to say about Mark Kozelek's music. This collection of live works are pure joy. Now, if we can only get "The Finally LP" put up on iTunes.
