iTunes Editors’ Notes

Brooklyn-based Lucius's first full-length album, Wildewoman is an eclectic, winding indie-pop excursion, grounded in humming hooks, spunky harmonies, and unconventional instrumentation. Signed to Mom + Pop Music—a label that's home to Sleigh Bells, Freelance Whales, and Andrew Bird, among others—the group leaps among eras of pop music with breezy facility, sounding like '60s girl group one moment and sleekly sophisticated new wave revivalists the next. From the dance-ready "Turn It Around" to the quiet, yearning "Two of Us on the Run," the styles vary wildly from track to track. But things are held together by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig (both voice majors at Berklee College of Music), whose vocals offer a sharp, unifying current that flows throughout the album.

Anxiously Awaited

I've so far greatly enjoyed their EP. They clearly put a great deal of time and thought into each song. It's so very unusual to find such great songs that have driving melodies, haunting and beautiful harmonies, thumping and thrumming rhythms. Each song seems to have ALL of these qualities, not just one or two. This is such a rare occurence. It's easy to find one, maybe even two factors, but to find all of them is to discover a gem. They also tend to evoke the notion that you know exactly what the songwriters are feeling because you've been there yourself. I'm very excited to see what these ladies have in store for us next!

For those so concerned about the artwork, maybe try listening to the music!

Great Voices, Terrible Engineering

I am a new fan to Lucius having discovered them via a NYT article during the Summer. The Wild Honey Pie video of the group singing "Two of Us on the Run" had me hooked. So I marked my calendar for the release of Wildewoman. Their voices are so clean, pristine, beautiful, harmonic and emotional.

The album downloaded on iTune almost makes me think it was a early file. Balance of instruments to voices is weighted way too heavily to the percussion and instrumentation and covers their elegant voices. Sudden volume increased during breaks is not enjoyable at all. It is simply poorly engineered and produced.

If the file was not a mistake, then I eagerly await an unplugged version of the album.

Sorry ladies as I really love your voices. I just want to enjoy their purity of sound. In the mean time I am hoping to see you live.

Just buy it.

The future of music. I know it's a bold statement but this group is such gift to modern pop/rock music. It gives me hope. If you ever have the chance to see them live you better go. Phenomenal live band.
