iTunes Review

Try as he might, Art Garfunkel had trouble emerging from ex-partner Paul Simon’s shadow as his solo career progressed. Scissors Cut finds him recording material by a host of famous and lesser-known tunesmiths; predictably, the results are uneven. On the plus side, Garfunkel rekindles his old ethereal magic on Gallagher and Lyle’s atmospheric “A Heart in New York” and rises to near-operatic heights on Clifford T. Ward’s aching “Up in the World.” His crystalline tenor brings out the tenderness in Jules Shear’s “So Easy to Begin” and the whimsy in Mike Batt’s “Bright Eyes” (a tune from the Watership Down film soundtrack that became a chart-topping British hit). Producer Roy Halee (the studio wizard behind Simon & Garfunkel’s Bookends and Bridge Over Trouble Water) brings an expansive, resonant sound to the tracks, framing Garfunkel in gilt-edged arrangements.

It's the voice that matters

This album is more about the beauty of Art's voice than anything. Most of the songs are arranged with full, but gentle backing. I consider it closer to Easy Listening than pop, but it has a wonderful feel to it. The tunes seem just right for his voice and he definitely makes the most of the opportunity. Heart in New York and Bright Eyes are the standouts for me. While not a collection you may listen intently to, or a lyrical tour de force, a wonderful album to read by or just prop up your feet and relax on a rainy day.

Keep Listening . . . you'll love it (eventually)

I'm a huge Garfunkel fan. I have all of his albums. Scissor's Cut took me a while to start enjoying. The songs have a very sleepy/easy feel to them. At first, nothing really grabbed (not a single song) as being a standout. However, I kept playing it and it's now become one of my all-time favorites and my 2nd favorite Garfunkel album (next to the incomparable Breakaway). It speaks to my soul!

After Simon & Garfunkel, one of the most successful duos in pop history, split up in 1970, Art Garfunkel became a solo artist, as well as pursuing an acting career. Garfunkel's pure, high tenor had been one of the most distinctive elements of the duo's music, yet he wasn't responsible for the songwriting -- Simon wrote all of the group's hits. Not surprisingly, Garfunkel relied on other songwriters, from Jimmy Webb and Randy Newman, in addition to rock & roll standards like "I Only Have Eyes for...
