Customer Reviews

Over the past three albums Chris Milam has shown tremendous growth as a songwriter. His lyrics cut right to the heart of the matter. And he follows them with beautiful melodies that really make the lyrics sing even more. And if he is coming to your city, go see him! He's an amazing live performer!

This is the most impressive of Milam's three albums, with the most distinctive and personal lyrics and the most evocative melodies. All the selections are strong. Milam's cover of the Paul Simon classic "Boy in the Bubble" is remarkable, but I found the treatments of Milam's original compositions "Cold Weather Girls" and "Edge of the World" to be especially haunting.

With this album Milam clearly establishes himself as a fresh new presence on the pop scene, a voice to reckon with.

One of 2010's Best

With Up, Chris Milam makes the leap from "exciting young talent" to "songwriting prodigy." This album's inviting pop melodies and breath-taking lyrics are reminiscent of 60's singer/songwriters: Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and the like.

"In the Air Tonight" is a lyrical tour-de-force; "Maria, Maria' recalls S&G's "Cecilia," but for a new generation; "Up" is an imminently catchy and winning love letter; "Thirteen Hours" is a heart-breaking lullabye, and a standout; "If You Don't Love Me By Now" revitalizes Motown songwriting with contemporary lyrics; "Coldweather Girls" is a stunning lyric, earning comparisons to Josh Ritter and Leonard Cohen; "Melanie" and "Edge of the World" are gorgeous, haunting, and breath-takingly poetic; and, finally cementing the comparison, his cover of "The Boy In the Bubble" is the best I've heard--exuberant, wistful, and incapable of holding back.

Simply put, this is the album I've been waiting for. It's remarkable work by one of our best young songwriters.
