Album Review

DJ /rupture fans who are able to remember his excellent studio record from 2004 (Special Gunpowder) shouldn't be surprised at the variety or quality of 2008's Uproot mix album. A collection of downtown techno experimentalism, and including a cast of collaborators close to /rupture's heart, Uproot sounds of a piece, and actually a little monotonal compared to his sprawling, guest-heavy production album of four years earlier. That said, Uproot earns high marks for its cohesion, with clashing effects never getting in the way of its insistent groove (it is a mix album, after all). Highlights come with the dub digitalia of Ekstrak and the contributions (both a track and a remix) from Team Shadetek.

One of the Best DJ Albums Since 'Entroducing'

I arrived on iTunes shocked that there had not yet been a review for what would eventually become my favorite album of 2008 and, after many listens, one of my favorites of all time. As a huge fan of DJ Shadow's Entroducing, the art of the sample is not foreign, and ever since Changeling pumped through my car speakers back in 2002, my ear has always relished the company of similar artists. While Shadow mainly dabbles in Hip-Hop and Dark Jazz, Rupture prefers to venture into Dubstep, Tribal beats, and Latina-based rhytms, often mashing up a worldy variety of melodies that are not only pleasing to the ear, but function as a political statement in their own.
It is reccomended that you purchase the entire album, as each song runs into each other flawlessly, and to split it up into snippets would be a crime. Some standout tracks to listen for are 'Winter Buds, 'Uranium,' 'Too Much,' 'Homeboys,' and the absolutely beautiful 'Plays John Cassavettes.' Do yourself a favor and buy the album- you'll love it. In the words of Pitchfork, "He is, to put it bluntly, one of those people who gets it right far more often and in more different ways than your ordinary person really should. Uproot is another one of those instances."
