Your portal into folk metal...

Finntroll's latest, Ur Jordens Djup is amazing. Their new vocalist, Vreth, speaks Swedish natively, so his pronunciation on his barked out syllables is better than Wilska's earlier. You may miss Tapio Wilska, but I like Vreth better, and he reminds me more of Katla, the original vocalist. The album opens with Gryning, dawn, a very mischievous sounding instrumental. The album tells tales of the struggle between witches and troll shamans, Nordic folklore, the Kalavela, and stories of the kingshaman of trolls, Rivfader. The album is brought to a close by Kvälling, dusk, a beautiful instrumental piece that fits the name very well. The song itself isn't actually 13 minutes, most of it is ambience, then at about 11 minutes, one of Finntroll's traditional hidden tracks comes in. My favorite songs on this album are Sång, Slagbröder, En Mäktig Här, and Under Två Runor.

For a tough workout..
