EDITORS’ NOTES

Sprawling, funky, ambitious—D.D Dumbo is a pop outcast with serious wanderlust. That the Castlemaine resident (real name: Oliver Perry) can plunge you into kaleidoscopic daydreams (“In the Water,” “Toxic City”) as easily he can make your backbone slide (“Satan,” “Walrus”) speaks to his abilities. Fluent in multiple styles and instruments, Utopia Defeated moves with confident ease and grace—the work of a restless perfectionist searching for, and finding, the perfect sound in his head.

Top 10 of 2016!

D.D Dumbo's 'Utopia Defeated' was such a pleasant surprise! It's a unique, funky album that really grooves with catchy melodies, bluesy vocals, sick guitar loops (& other unique instruments–i.e.; clarinet)! Filled with so many gems that it's hard to pick a favorite, but my most listened to tracks would probably be: King Franco Picasso, Satan, Alihukwe, Brother, & Walrus! I'm so stoked I happen to stumble upon this album; I was glancing over AOTY's "Best Albums" list & saw that D.D Dumbo's 'Utopia Defeated' was #12 in 2016 (so far)! It's my "go to" review site since every score is calculated by averaging all of the major top music reviewers' scores. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Defeated Indeed

I know no one takes the time to write or read iTunes reviews anymore, but that should make this all the more meaningful. D.D Dumbo's album is an eerie, lo-fi masterpiece. Each song is crafted with careful construction - from lyrical form to beautiful arrangements and textures, to soaring vocals. Try "Walrus," try "Cortisol," and also "Satan." Once you're hooked, get the album.

About D.D Dumbo

D.D Dumbo is the performing name of Australian singer/songwriter Oliver Hugh Perry, an artist known for his unique pop fusion that utilizes 12-string guitar, looping pedals, and a wide-ranging set of influences from meandering desert blues to Tuvan melodies and various African traditions. A native of Castlemaine, Victoria, Dumbo developed his sound over several years, releasing his debut EP, Tropical Oceans, in 2013. That same year, he made a splash in the U.S. at the annual SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Support slots with major acts like tUnE-yArDs, St. Vincent, and Tame Impala followed and he eventually signed with U.K. label 4AD, which reissued his first EP. Following the release of the singles "Satan" and "Walrus," his debut full-length, Utopia Defeated, arrived in October 2016. ~ Timothy Monger
