Album Review

Although Gates and Plouf still play almost everything on their second outing, they make things more interesting by fooling around with a greater variety of instruments (adding more keyboards particularly) and getting outside guest vocalists to harmonize on a few songs. The songwriting (now handled by Gates exclusively) gets more penetrating as well, and the production is more imaginative (but does not approach slickness). At their most morose they recall "sadcore" groups like Low and Spain, but the Spinanes have more diversity than those acts.

Great Album

I'm terrible at writing reviews, but this album deserves one. I borrowed Kelly's copy in 1999, then bought the vinyl version at the old Sub Pop store in the Pike Place Market. This album goes from slow and melancholy to uptempo rock. Rebecca Gates's voice and singing style is unlike anything I'd heard before. She was the first female songwriter I liked who rocked. I remember sitting in the backseat of Kristina's car thinking it was thundering outside, driving through uptown Athens, Ohio. It was just track five. I didn't know I was having a musical moment. I don't know where we were going. I thought there was thunder and Kristina was laughing and saying no, that's just the music.

Spinanes were one of a kind!

I like the other review here; it seems like people who like Spinanes were given the introduction through a friend, which is is always great. Their music and fans deserved to be shared.
Another great album, but the iTunes review should change the "sad core" label. What a silly term. The Spinanes cannot be labeled or boxed in ; they were simply a great band who did things their own way.

Formed: 1991 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s

In alternative rock, as in any other genre, it's hard to stand out from a crowded field. When the Spinanes emerged in the early '90s, they got a couple legs up on the competition to be different. Taking the power trio format one stage further, they created a full-bodied rock sound with just two members, guitarist/singer Rebecca Gates and drummer Scott Plouf. They were...
