Album Review

Perhaps it's unfair to label the Crystal Method as an American Chemical Brothers, since they are contemporaries of, not successors to, the English duo, but the comparison makes sense. Like the Chemicals, the Crystal Method is into big beats. There isn't much subtlety to their music, but there doesn't need to be, since their heady fusion of classic, late-'80s hip-hop, rave, techno, and rock is intoxicating on its own. Vegas, the duo's debut album, rushes by in a quasi-psychedelic blur, occasionally stopping for ambient detours. There aren't any revelations along the way, but the Crystal Method does this crossover techno well, which makes Vegas a pleasure.

Electronic Music Gateway

This album is an essential gateway into electronic music. It's influence is heard throughout the last 8 years of all genres of electronic music - particularly trance, ambient and breaks. Listen closely and repeatedly to acclimate to the high definition textures in this album. To me, this is the only album that The Crystal Method really put their all into. After listening to this album literally hundreds of times on headphones and in my car over the years, I still return to "Vapor Trail" and "Bad Stone".

The best Techno, Period

Definitely the best album released by one of the best sounds out there. The best songs were Trip Like I Do, Busy Child, High Roller, Keep Hope Alive, and Vapor Trail. Some may say it is repetitive, but it is loop-based. For those who don't know, the original release title was the Crystal Melody.

ABSOFREAKINLUTELY AMAZING

The first time I heard this album was in 1998 and I was on some serious MDMA at the time but even with a sober mind you can appreciate every detail these guys put into their music. This album is the work of geniuses and is by far the best electronic album of all time. To this day I rank this album in my top 10 of all music. There should be no question as to whether you should buy every song. Do it, you won't regret it.

L.A.'s Crystal Method were referred to as America's answer to the Chemical Brothers. A dance-based electronic duo with a definite rock band feel, the comparison seemed appropriate, although it tended to erase what made the group distinct: a solid base in American hip-hop, rock, soul, and pop. Formed in 1993 by Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland, Crystal Method was the longest-running stop in a string of projects that led them from their native Las Vegas (and some forgettable four-track stabs at vocal...
