A Glam Rock Fairy Tale
Velvet Goldmine is the soundtrack album from the 1998 Movie of the same name. In Essence the film, and the music, is a glitter fair tale about the events in the London Glam Rock Scene in the early 1970s. This sound track is a marvelous mix of actual era music (opening with Eno's NEEDLE IN THE CAMEL'S EYE) and songs crafted just for the film, featuring glam rock super star Brian Slade/Maxwell Demon and his band TheVenus In Furs, songs that could have well come out of the brain of David Bowie, whose music is curiously missing from the Movie, where as there are pieces by Iggy Pop (T.V. Eye), Lou Reed (Satellite of Love) and T. Rex (Diamond Meadows). There is also a wonderful cover of Eno's BABY'S ON FIRE by The Venus In Furs, which in the film is used as a live piece where that fateful on stage event of David Bowie and another muscian's guitar was re-enacted. The cover of T.V. Eye almost landed the actor who portraied Kurt Wylde (read Iggy Pop) a music contract. I often day dream, while listeing to the pieces composed expressly for the film, that these are lost pieces of the Glam Era that were recently rediscovered, or in a more SciFi mood that this is Glitter Rock from an Alternate Reality, perhaps brought back by a wandering Jerry Cornelius: THE BALLAD OF MAXWELL DEMON is right up there with ZIGGY STARDUST or MOTHER WHALE EYELESS or mythic quality. And the Sound developed for Maxwell Demon and The Venus in Furs could have easily wandered off of THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD, HUNKY DORY, TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN, HERE COME THE WARM JETS, and ofcourse THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST, without being a direct BITE of any of these. In the Film, this new music and the original era music are so seemlessly welded that old timers have a hard time seeing the joins, and those unfamiliar with the Glam Era cannot tell the new stuff from the originals. If you are a fan of Glam, and don't have this. SHAME SHAME SHAME on you. And while half of this album is a work of fictions, all of it is total true, and must be played AT MAXIMUM VOLUME. MM
