iTunes Review

Fantasy Memorial is an ambitious debut with a breezy summertime feel. Equipped with guitar, bass, keyboards, and drum machines this Brooklyn-based trio puts together a colorful set of intricate yet catchy songs with sunny melodies and sing-along choruses. Featuring tight three-part harmonies set to a variety of Latin and African rhythms, the album rides a playfully exotic groove as the band glides across a wide range of styles. Standouts include the tropical swing of “I Ni Sogoma” and “Vendela Vida,” the infectious guitar figures of “Family Waves” and “Know Your Own Strength,” and the lushly layered “Sleeping In” and “Crossing the Cannon.” The songs are well-constructed and peppered with surprises especially including their clever use of programmed beats, which add texture, as well as snippets of bird songs, children playing, and other found sounds half hidden in the mix. Upbeat and melodic, Fantasy Memorial is a charming and impressive debut.

The sound of this very moment

This is a fantastic record. All the comparisons and combinations describing its sound are pretty quickly obvious ("Dude, it's like a Vampire Weekend, Spit Enz and Animal Collective mash-up produced by Brian Wilson) but unfairly minimize a unique and very cool sound. These guys deserve both hipster critical praise and lots of fans for coming up with a clever, listenable record that may hold up as amoung the best of the year. It's interesting and good-natured pop but never easy to categorize despite what you'll hear. People I've recommended it to have liked it. Try it. You may dig it too.

I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this creative and fun album. It's great to see that people still know how to make great music. Get this album, you won't reget it.

I downlaoded a live session of these guys, and haven't been able to stop playing them for 5 days. The true flavor of DF's music seems to derive from an influence of Talking Heads, Shins, and even Cake. The album seems to hold pretty true to the energy of the live show, which is by far one of the best live shows I've picked up in a long time.

Formed: 2008 in Brooklyn, NY

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Brooklyn-based indie pop purveyors Dinosaur Feathers synthesize African, Brazilian, and retro-pop influences into their own sunshine-soaked sonics. The project began in summer 2008 as a solo outing for singer/guitarist/drum machine player Greg Sullo to reimagine the sounds of the Beatles and Os Mutantes with modern technology, but grew as keyboardist/singer (and Sullo's college a cappella bandmate) Derek Zimmerman offered to serve as harmony vocalist, and the group was rounded out with bassist Adam...
