Album Review

Billy Idol was still a rock & roll bad boy despite being over the hill by the start of the new millennium. Billy Idol: VH1 Storytellers captures that typical snarl without the bombast and returns to basics. The real rawness behind such classics as "Flesh for Fantasy," "Cradle of Love," and "To Be a Lover" is stripped, and the acoustic mix found on this album showcases Idol's appeal on a different level. The sexiness is still there, and Idol and guitarist Steve Stevens compose a magic as well. Fans should be pleased, for the tantalizing swagger of "Rebel Yell" is ageless. Renditions of Generation X's "Kiss Me Deadly" and "Dancing With Myself" are just as exciting, however it's the intensity of the punk anthem "Ready Steady Go" that brings everything together. While Billy Idol was issuing smash singles during a decade criticized for being unoriginal, Billy Idol: VH1 Storytellers suggests otherwise.

Customer Reviews

This album puts fresh paint on some good old Billy Idol tracks, and showcases guitarist Steve Stevens' impressive electric and acoustic talents (e.g., "Got to Be a Lover"). I had not purchased a Billy Idol song or album until I heard Storytellers. Enough said. Enjoy.

Very Good

This album really takes the old hits and gives you a new look at them all. Really enjoyable. I was not a huge fan of Billy the first go around, but this really gave me a new perspective and I love it.

Idol live with acoustic elements amazing

Over the years, I ended up slowly forgetting how rich and original 80's alternative / punk was compared to all other eras of music; how shallow the music of today is compared to back then.. So take an 80s icon like billy idol, give his band an acoustic guitar, play his hit songs with it.. And it just raises the bar on how awesome and timeless his music really is.. I Agree with others on how fresh this variant of his great songs sound.. I have to thank Howard Stern for putting Billy Idol on his show a week ago and giving me a chance to rediscover Idols music all over again! So it's 130am and I can't stop listening to it!!

Along with Duran Duran, Billy Idol was one the first pop/rock artists to achieve massive success in the early '80s due to a then brand-new U.S. television network, MTV. Mixing his bad-boy good looks with an appealing blend of pop hooks, punk attitude, and a dance beats, Idol quickly rocketed to stardom, before hard living derailed his career and almost proved fatal. Born William Michael Albert Broad on November 30, 1955, in Middlesex, England, the youngster relocated with his family for a brief spell...
