Editors’ Notes

This gang of offbeat New Zealanders make multi-culti music that borrows freely from whatever traditions happen to suit their party-minded purposes at any given moment. The band's second album is a giddily kaleidoscopic experience. African highlife guitar lines intersect with disco rhythms and dub effects on "Electric Company." "Numbers" mates post-samba beats with funk guitar lines. The opening track, "Aby," is a slip-sliding rush of inside-out funk grooves and postpunk edge, and "Journey" mixes a psychedelic garage-rock rave-up with the minimalist momentum of the motorik style pioneered by Krautrockers like Neu!. Bright synth lines, polyrhythmic percussion, and heavily processed guitar tones tumble by with freewheeling abandon. The band creates a constantly shifting but consistently ecstatic mood, often making use of homemade instruments. (How many other groups can boast a "sexomouse marimba" in their arsenals, for instance?) Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music is a wild ride, but one well worth the risks of momentary disorientation.
