Providence led me to this musical treasure

During my undergraduate studies I ventured into a classical music store to find a recording of Renaissance polyphony, and as of yet I had never heard a single work in this genre. I stumbled across an LP that caught my eye of Victorias Tenebrae Responsories. To my surprise this music plumed the very core of my heart yet one side of the LP was terribly damaged. Unfortunately the man at the record store said it was just by chance that they received this LP. Ten years latter when I invested in my first CD player the Tenebrae Responsories was available by the Tallis Scholars and was the first CD to start my collection. To hear this music containing such mystical depth of expression with out all the pops and crackles was awesome. In retrospect as my collection and knowledge of polyphony has grown I only wish that the sound engineer would have made the sound more resonate,a little less dry, like the Scholars recording of Victoria's Requiem. To read along the text which describes our Lord's passion gives the music added depth because Victoria's word painting breathes infused life into the work, without resorting to madrigal expressions like Gesualdo, but you be the judge to which is more powerful. Invest in both the Tenebrae and the Tallis Scholars recording of the Victoria Lamentations which were sung in context together alternately Thursday through Saturday During Holy Week. I could never give enough praise to these two works, and I hope you too discover the great treasure that lies waiting.
