Editors’ Notes

California songstress Emily Jane White hoes the same rich territory as fellow California folkie Alela Diane and the East Coast’s Marissa Nadler. She’s got a smoky, alluring voice and an affinity for quiet, darkly introspective music tinged with something distantly related to goth-flavored Americana. After her debut, Dark Undercoat, received well-deserved accolades, White wisely stayed the course. Though pedal steel, strings, piano, and drums are part and parcel of Victorian America, the album is stark and stripped down, with echoing white space often surrounding a skeletal series of guitar or cello notes. White’s lovely voice is the only dressing atop arrangements so simple they're both vulnerable and bold. There are moments, however, where orchestral elements converge—a cymbal's shimmer washes forcefully over a solemn piano, or a martial snare links with a sorrowful violin—and it manages to feel grand and important. The restraint often translates to something surprisingly epic, and most always to something heartwrenchingly elegant and beautiful.

Dark Folk

I first owned dark undercoat and really liked it but was left a little unsatisfied. This is everything that Dark Undercoat wasn't. If you like complex, brooding acoustic music with cellos and beautiful smooth vocals then I really recommend buying this album, physically if possible, as in at a store. I love this album and it's one of my favorites, right there next to my Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens vinyls.

At the very least get Liza...

I saw a live performance on Current that I liked better, but the version of Liza here is good as well.

Why is this listed as New/Noteworthy in the Rock Genre
