iTunes Review

Despite recording for the Kill Rock Stars label, Milagres aren't the label’s usual fare of raw indie rock or naturalistic songwriters. Brooklyn’s Milagres clearly owe stylistic debts to the super sheen of Bryan Ferry and David Bowie and, arguably, other highly processed mainstream musicians. (Some critics have compared them to Coldplay.) When they capture a sense of Ferry/Bowie chic, they’re also capturing a melodic complexity that’s worth hearing repeatedly. The single “The Letterbomb” is a gorgeous work that lets singer Kyle Wilson play to the strengths in his vocal range. “Urban Eunuchs” balances off a deep soundfield that’s as beautifully arranged as any first-rate art-rock or R&B album. “Jeweled Cave” sounds like a lost Roxy Music song that was once treasured by college radio DJs in the ‘80s. Traces of Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, and Prince appear throughout the album, in portions of arrangements, a vocal approach, or simply in terms of atmosphere. Violent Light is hardly violent; it's often lush, illuminating, and quite beautiful.

Deeper, richer, more sublime. This album is a luscious step forward.

Terrific follow up effort, these guys are very underappreciated.

Soon after the album was completed, the frontman went on a climbing expedition and took a spill that resulted in a serious back injury. While bedridden, he wrote the bulk of their sophomore album.
