Whether you are familiar with Bacewicz's music or will listen to her works for the first time, you are about to embark on an adventure of quality and great interest. I have the privilege of following Kurkowicz's career for a number of years. She is a consummate artist of poise, style, technical mastery and remarkable, memorable artistry. She undertakes projects of true value (as is evident in her recording output) and makes an important contribution to our times. Kurkowicz plays Bacewicz with the intimacy (when appropriate), vigor, character, range of sound and color that would be bound to satisfy the composer. Bacewicz belongs among the stars of the Polish "school" of composition in the 20th century. The three concertos on this disc display Bacewicz's wide stylistic range--from 'neo-classical' (with Bacewicz's ever present personal style) to a more contemporary style, adventurous soundscapes, contemporary demands on the soloist and the orchestra. The artists render these pieces superbly. Kurkowicz plays with brilliant sound, one of depth and rich color. She is an artist passionately devoted to the music--searching, inquisitive, thoughtful, highly intelligent. The Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and maestro Lukasz Borowicz create a vibrant, dynamic, energetic and convincing soundscapes. I am looking forward to the remaining concertos in these artists' rendition. The entire set is sure to be an irreplaceable collection for any violinist and music lover.
