great addition to the ALOS albums worth the wait.. up beat and nothing short of awesome..

Excited for Pt. 2!

I've been following ALOS since The Apneist back in 2009 (Spring if I remember correctly). I thoroughly enjoyed the prog-rock moments, the screaming of Zack Geist, the electronic backdrops, and the somewhat aggressive moments of the album (eg Carving A Canyon, etc). I was hesitant to buy this first installment of their second full length after hearing Prisoners No More, which is essentially a verse-chorus-verse electronic song (catchy, but lacking all of the aggressive elements I had enjoyed from the Apneist). But, as one of their biggest fans (I've spoken with James Keenan himself on facebook and such numerous times), I decided to support them and buy this, after hearing the little songs demos you can preview. These songs are progress from The Apneist in my opinion. I was really scared that I wouldn't hear a single guitar or breakdown-ish moment at all, but I was pleasantly surprised. Welcome Lights has a nice 10 second breakdown, and interesting guitar work. Trapped In Paradise has some interesting prog-driven moments with electric guitars, and The Chase Is On also has some powerful drumming and a general rock feel. If anything, Vita Nova is just ALOS growing a little more dependent upon electronics, which is absolutely fine, because as James Keenan has proven, he is quite adept with his synth arpeggios and whatnot. Definitely reminiscent of the last album, but also different. I can't wait for the next installments and Crystal City (the last album) to come out in the summer of 2012.
