Album Review

In 1972, Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque, both already established artists, opened a show together in Teatro Castro Alves, Salvador, Bahia, where an LP of which this is the CD reissue was recorded. This is a great classic of that period. It is necessary to understand that, in those times, all civil expression was closely investigated, and many times prohibited. Spokesmen of the masses, the artists were the escape valve to an unbearable pressure, and the audience's delight (better yet, delirium) at ciphered messages against dictatorship contained in the lyrics, in the expression, in the choice of repertoire, is evident throughout this must-have album. It has 11 songs, all of them hits or immortal classics.

Where to start?

Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso have been two of the most influential singers in Brazil. Chico Buarque, who unfortunately is not as well known in the USA has been one of my favorites since the 80s (they have been around longer than that!). Do yourself a favor and buy this album, this contains some of the classic songs of both artists. And let's hope iTunes gets more music of Chico Buarque.

And even the most cursory listen to his recorded output since the 1960s proves that this is no exaggeration. Born in 1942 in Santo Amaro da Purificacao in Brazil's Bahia region, Veloso absorbed the rich Bahian musical heritage that was influenced by Caribbean, African, and North American...
